We Need to Recognize Who We Are

We are not XML people. Our interest and need is in handling and processing textual data.

We use XML to the extent that it aids our data handling and processing. But we necessarily use other (non-XML) things as well, such as programming languages (other than those produced by the W3C) and markup techniques (for overlapped markup, for example).
